Harry spent two months in Indo. Here’s what he got up to:
We started off making our way through Sumbawa, which was an adventure in itself. About 12 hours of travelling, two ferries and a few different layovers before finally making it over. We stayed in little pods along the way, which was pretty cool and definitely part of the experience.
Once we got there, we had a couple of days to slow down and get into the Indonesian way of life. Checking out markets, eating good local food and cruising around before getting stuck into the surfing.
From Sumbawa, we made our way across to Krui and eventually up to the Mentawais. By the end of the trip, we’d flown eight flights, two ferries and countless boats, cars and random transfers. Felt like we were always packing our bags back up and heading somewhere else.
The Mentawais was probably the highlight. We stayed at Kokos Resort, which was such a sick place to base ourselves. The people were unreal, the food was next level and after surfing all day, coming back to a good feed and hanging with everyone was pretty hard to beat.
Rifles was probably my favourite wave of the whole trip. The Mentawais definitely delivered some of the best waves, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. I managed to get three stitches in my shin after getting properly worked on the reef, plus a few other pretty serious cuts. Not ideal, but I guess that’s part of surfing those places.
There were some pretty good nights away from the surf too. After surfing all day, it was good to switch off, head to Bat Narrow, have a few drinks and let loose with everyone. Met heaps of random characters and had some pretty funny experiences with people we never would have met back home.
Apart from chasing waves and filming, it was everything around the trip that made it so good. The long travel days, boats, markets, good food, getting smashed on the reef, late nights and just seeing what happens when you don’t really have a plan.
From Sumbawa to Krui and eventually the Mentawais, it was one of those trips that’s pretty hard to explain until you’ve actually done it.
Good waves, a few stitches, plenty of laughs and a whole lot of good people.
