The fashion industry can be a dirty business, but it doesn’t have to be. If you choose cotton, choose organic - organic cotton is the conscious, cleaner cousin of conventional cotton. While cotton is the most commonly produced natural fibre worldwide, less than 1% is grown organically. Organic cotton vs conventional cotton is a no brainer, and here’s why Afends choose organic every time.

Certified organic cotton yarn is cotton produced in compliance with organic agricultural standards with the three main certifications being GOTS, OCS 100 and OCS Blended. These certifications put people and the planet first by using only natural and holistic processes to cultivate the crops.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain ensuring all textiles are made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibres.
OCS 100 verifies that a product is made from between 95-100% organic material. The Organic Content Standard (OCS) certification verifies that a product has met organic standards throughout its journey from raw material to finished product.
OCS Blended verifies that a product is made from between 5-95% organic material. The Organic Content Standard (OCS) certification verifies that a product has met organic standards throughout its journey from raw material to finished product.

Organic cotton farming promotes fair and safe working conditions for the farmers by eliminating the use of toxic chemicals and having certifications in place to ensure there is no child slavery or forced labour. They also protect women's rights, with 97% of producer groups encouraging women's participation.
Organic cotton farming uses 62% less energy than conventional cotton - the energy saved in one year is equivalent to leaving a 60-watt lightbulb on for 549 314 years.

It takes on average 2700 litres to produce enough cotton to make a single t-shirt. Organic cotton uses 91% less water as it is most commonly grown in rain-fed areas, which is the equivalent of conserving 87 201 Olympic sized swimming pools.
Organic cotton produces 46% less CO2 than conventional cotton by eliminating the use of nitrous dioxide-releasing fertilisers and pesticides and using fewer mechanised farming practices.
GOTS & OCS Certifications ensure no genetically modified seeds, toxic chemicals, herbicides, pesticides or synthetic fertilisers are used to grow organic cotton. This requirement provides safer working conditions for farmers, emits fewer greenhouse gases and reduces water pollution by 98%.
Organic cotton farming promotes healthier soil through crop rotation, moisture retention and natural methods such as composting, which aids in maintaining and replenishing the fertility of the soil.
Organic cotton fibres are longer, more durable and less likely to weaken or break than conventional cotton fibres, making organic cotton clothing buttery soft, lightweight and breathable.
Organic cotton clothing has hypoallergenic properties making it super soft, skin-friendly and suitable for sensitive skin.
Cotton is a natural, renewable and biodegradable source. As 100% organic cotton is grown without toxic or harmful chemicals, it can be reused, recycled and then break down in harmony with the planet contributing to a circular fashion industry.
Organic cotton clothing has become a core part of Afends for both Men's and Women's collections. Organic cotton is a more conscious crop than conventional cotton, requiring significantly less water, saving energy, and promoting safe working conditions for the farmers. Afends core pillar, Premium Organic, is paving the way for a future of sustainable fashion.
